Want to increase your outdoor skills? Consider enrolling in a rigorous survival school

There are many reasons why one may want to learn survival skills, and this school teaches methods that go beyond the great outdoors.

Some may be inspired by British TV series like Gray bear or the Discovery series Naked and scared. Others may really want to visit Gate of the Arctic National Park (which really requires survival skills to visit).

But whatever the reason, learning new survival skills builds self-confidence when traveling off-piste. Plus, it’s just fun that you can go out and explore the wilderness with the right skills (and maybe show your friends). About Sigma 3 Survival School

There are a number of survival schools in the United States to choose from. One of the most important is the Sigma 3 Survival School (SIGMA 3 Survival stands for Scout, Survive, Sustain). They say of themselves they are “the largest and most comprehensive survival school in the world“with a global presence. They claim that some of their instructors are”some of the most hardcore survival, tactical and medical instructors on the planet. “

They teach a range of primitive skills that supplement or even replace the need for survival gear. Their classes are intense and completely immersive in wilderness survival as well as bushcraft programs. Their main goal is to train people who can roam the wilderness with nothing but a knife and survive indefinitely.

They teach their students to get lost and not to fear the inhospitable wilderness that surrounds them. They rate their courses by level of difficulty on a scale of 1 to 3, almost anyone (regardless of their fitness level) can take all three courses.

  • Difficulty levels: Ranked 1 to 3

When it comes to class sizes, they never put more than 15-20 people in a class (other schools may have 30-200 students in a class) and they aim for an instructor-to-student ratio of 1:10. Another good news is that there is little theoretical time in the classroom, most of it being hands-on training.

  • Report: Instructor / student ratio of 1:10

They have too many courses to do justice here, but here is a sample of the courses on offer. Check their website for a full list. Here are three selected courses where you can choose to be the next Bear Grylls, James Bond or Robin Hood:
