The 103 Best Releases of Record Store Day 2022

This weekend, the annual Record Store Day hostilities will begin on two fronts.

Aside from the endless pedantic parochial wrangling over why it’s called Record Store Day rather than Record Shop Day, there will be no end to nasty scrimmages and skirmishes as collectors and finalists strive to avail themselves of this limited, colorful vinyl than the record editions they already own – in at least three different formats.

So what’s to be won this time around? Enduring Sheffield stalwarts Def Leppard will unleash the 1981s High ‘N’ Dry, their second album, and the first with the production of Mutt Lange, in the form of a vinyl record. Leading a significant batch of RSD releases from Rhino Records, Bad Company’s Live 1979 arrives on opaque orange double vinyl and captures the post-Free/Mott supergroup in action at Wembley’s Empire Pool.

Deadheads will also revel in the Grateful Dead’s extensive five-LP capture of Rhino at Empire Pool Wembley in 1972. The label deftly caters to hardcore fans with rather more niche packages: LA Woman Sessions spans four vinyls in a rather ambitious ‘limited’ edition of 19,500 copies, while The Replacements’ Unsuitable for Broadcasting: KFAI’s Lost Concert documents Paul Westerberg’s boys in full punk effect in ’81 Minneapolis.

Michael Des Barres’ Detective released his self-titled debut on the Swansong label, fantasized about Jimmy Page, on silver vinyl, while Blondie’s single topped the 1979 charts sunday girl is dry-processed over a seven-inch red and yellow double vinyl in four not-quite-different incarnations.

T.Rex The cursor gets its umpteenth release, if it’s its first on vinyl, to celebrate its 50th anniversary, but probably the most desirable releases of the day are offered by David Bowie’s representatives here on earth who give us both the Brilliant Adventure and Toy EPs on 12 and 10 inch vinyl and CD.

Want more? More will follow, but watch out for the fine print: not all titles will be available in all stores; some titles may only be available in certain regions; and some titles won’t be available anywhere, as delays at pressing plants mean they’ll actually see the light of day at a later date.

Meet in the queue. And if we don’t, we’ll see June 18, because there’s another one.
