According to Lifetime’s synopsis, Doomsday Mom: The Lori Vallow Story is based on the true story of Lori Vallow (Smith).
A mother of two, in the fall of 2019, she came to national attention when her children, JJ and Tylee, went missing from their Idaho home.
However, as investigators delved into the private lives of Lori and her husband Chad Daybell (Blucas), they grew concerned. This is because the couple was involved in an apocalypse preparedness group.
Additionally, investigators had to scour five different states for clues. They uncovered a larger mystery, including several questionable deaths.
Eventually, in June 2020, the bodies of JJ and Tylee were found in the backyard of Chad’s house.

Lauren Lee Smith found portraying Lori Vallow a challenge
When Lauren Lee Smith took on this role for life, she said TV line she had wanted to “make things happen”. Representing the complex Lori Vallow was the challenge she was looking for. “I I dove deep into the whole story, and found it morbidly fascinating.
Additionally, Smith had problems understanding Vallow. She researched her real character. Eventually, she discovered that Lori was seen as “loving”. However, that was before she met Daybell. Once she met him, she was ‘brainwashed’.
Equipped with this information, Smith could figure out how to portray this horrific transformation.
I found the character so surreal and difficult to understand, and the idea of trying to figure out how this woman came to do what she did intrigued me. That, and coming up with our own interpretation of how she got to where she got to, was a really interesting challenge.
