Judge decides Paul Flores, Father Ruben will finally be tried for the disappearance and murder of Kristin Smart in 1996

A San Luis Obispo County judge, presiding over a preliminary hearing for Paul Flores and his father, Ruben, ruled that there was enough evidence for the two to stand trial in the murder of student Kristin Smart. Young Flores was arrested in April, almost 25 years after Smart’s disappearance. He was the last person to see her alive, having been seen walking with her to the university dorms. Over the years, authorities have listed him as a “person of interest”, “suspect” and “prime suspect”, and have bugged his phone and searched his parents’ home. Because Smart’s body was never found (she was declared legally dead in 2002), they couldn’t formally charge her until this year.

Ruben Flores will be tried as an accomplice in the murder, having allegedly stored Smart’s body under a terrace at his home and then moved it. At the preliminary hearing this week, their attorney attempted to argue “that there was no consistent theory” about what had happened to Smart’s body. But prosecutors have called witness after witness to attest to Flores’ violent, predatory and stalker behavior. One of them testified that Flores admitted to having committed Smart’s murder against her in 1996. Paul and Ruben Flores are due to be brought to justice on October 20.
