Elden Ring gets slammed
Ring of Elden released last week, earning universal acclaim from critics. The game’s embargo was lifted on February 23 and its PS5 Metascore on Metacritic was at 97, while the Xbox and PC versions each had a Metascore of 95. Those are very impressive numbers, but things have taken a turn. for the PC version user score in recent days. That number sits at 6.1, at the time of this writing, thanks to a number of “0” ratings given to Ring of Elden. It seems some fans aren’t happy with the game’s performance issues, lack of ultrawide support, and more.
“The PC port is really atrocious. No ultrawide support (in fact, it looks like it was intentionally removed, with multiple people saying it works, then shortly after is replaced by black bars), messed up FOV, no button icon porting Playstation, poor performance, fps capped at 60. This was just plain lazy development in an effort to make as much money as possible, while screwing up people paying $60 hoping for a competent product,” writes the user deadirons.
Another user, by the name of FredDie86, listed similar issues with the game, stating that they “missed moments when reviews were actually objective.” It should be noted that reviews have always been subjective and no reviewer can enter a game with complete objectivity. That said, it’s pretty hard to agree with a “0” score for a game based solely on those missing features, especially when Ring of Elden has so many positive qualities that struck a chord with gamers.
Metacritic is supposed to be a place where those interested in video games can go to find a range of opinions before making a purchase. While gamers are free to use the site to share negative opinions, too often we’ve seen weaponized review bombardment as part of a program. It’s a frustrating situation, and it’s truly unfair to the developers who put a lot of work and effort into the games we play, as well as to Metacritic users looking for a range of honest opinions.
Ring of Elden is available now on PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S and PC. You can check out all of our previous coverage of the game here.
